Tim is a passionate advocate of newsprint journalism and a great believer in the impact that can be achieved when carefully chosen words, stunning photography and great design come together on the printed page.
He appreciates the role that good journalism can play in building an archive of local life, particularly in the telling of stories about people that would otherwise be lost to history.
Tim has been a journalist for 37 years, with a three-year break to study history at the University of Exeter between 1982 and 1985, and has worked in every aspect of the newspaper editorial process: news reporting, local government and court reporting, feature writing and sports reporting, forward planning, sub-editing, page design, front-page layout, proofing and revision. He has led redesign projects and new product launches, and has edited and managed weekly and daily newspapers, free and paid-for titles.
Tim trained as a news reporter and feature writer on the Eastern Daily Press, one of Britain’s biggest regional morning titles, based in Norwich. He was a sub-editor on the Leicester Mercury and after that was design editor and picture editor on the Nottingham Evening Post, where he completed his first redesign project, taking the paper from broadsheet to tabloid format.
Later he became deputy editor of the Express & Echo in Exeter and then edited the Western Gazette, one of the longest-running titles in the country.
His most recent editorship, from 2010 to 2015, was of the Western Daily Press, which is enjoyed by around 40,000 readers a day. He was also editorial director at Capital Media Newspapers, publishers of the South London Press, Greenwich Mercury and London Weekly News series from 2015 to 2017, and had a short stint as editorial director of the Sunday Independent earlier this year, steering the title through a redesign and relaunch.
